Arantxa & Alex's Wedding at Holiday Hill in Mansfield CT

Alex married the love of his life on Saturday the 22nd of June!

Tory, the Groom’s Sister, told a sweet story about the night Alex first met Arantxa. Tory talked about how he came home from their first date (very late, and a little tipsy), and he told his mom that he met “the love of his life.” At the time, they all thought it was hilarious. Alex’s mom joked every time he mentioned Arantxa, by saying something along the lines of “you mean the love of your life?” Although we did not get the honor of meeting Alex’s mom at their wedding, we know she would have been just as much fun and loving as the rest of the Bride & Grooms amazing family.

Arantxa and her girls started the day at Blue Bird Farm, in Willington Connecticut. The farm has pigs, sheep, cows (including miniature highland beef!), and a few beautiful working Great Pyrenees (Yes the dog show side of us is coming out with our breed knowledge!). The girls got ready in their barn and then we did a few bridesmaid portraits on the grounds. They had a swing that happened to be in the perfect lighting for us to capture a few cute bridals for Arantxa.

Arantxa moved to the United States from Peru when she was a child, and many of her family members did not speak English. She had to translate for us a few times throughout the day.

Arantxa’s father only spoke Spanish, but that did not stop us from belly laughing at his jokes. We figured some of them out (from our high school Spanish classes), or had Arantxa translate for us! When we first met her father, Arantxa introduced us as the photographers, and he replied that Zac was very photogenic! Shelby quickly replied with “Si, muy bonita!” And we all laughed. As we walked away Arantxa said “do you know what you just said” and Shelby replied with “yes, he’s very pretty.” Then she laughed and said “no, you called him a pretty girl!” (Sorry Zac!)

The ceremony and wedding reception was held at Holiday Hill in Mansfield Connecticut. Holiday Hill is located just down the road from Uconn (and our high school where we first met!), and by day is a summer camp for local kids. The grounds are beautiful, they have a large wedding tent, and a gorgeous white barn. If you don’t know by now, we LOVE white walls, and natural light. This venue gave us both, and we were able to do many of their portraits against the white wood! The couple opted to have their wedding up in the woods on the camp’s stage. They were surrounded by family (and trees, Arantxa loves trees!)

Alex’s dad is a JP and officiated their marriage. His dad talked about how he knew Arantxa was special because of how much fun they had together. He even mentioned their little beer loving penguin, Max (Read about him here). At the end of their ceremony, Alex’s dad and the entire bridal party sang Esso Esso Esso before all doing a shot. If there is one thing we learned at Arantxa & Alex’s wedding, it is that you have to stomp your feet and chant Esso Esso Esso before doing a shot. We have no idea what it means (we thought we would just google it when we got home, but google was no help!)

Their shots at the end of the ceremony was just the beginning of the party! By the time we made it back from their portraits, the DJ already had the dance floor packed (all before dinner was even served!) Arantxa and Alex ran from the quick rain storm right into the party, with good luck on their side!

Arantxa and Alex’s bridal party was amazing. Not only were they fun to be around, but they were all just so sweet! They checked in with us to make sure we ate and to see if we needed anything. By the end of the night, we somehow ended up with the bridal party, photographing them climbing all over Holiday Hill’s play ship and playing mini golf! Arantxa and Alex both had their sisters Tory and Adjani as Co-Maid of Honors. Tory and Sandy both gave heartfelt speeches that even had us teary-eyed! Alex’s best man, Matt, was one of his college buddies, and he gave us a little more insight into just how cool these two are. We mentioned in their engagement session that these two have traveled all over (read about that here!) One thing Matt mentioned in his speech was they all traveled somewhere…(We think he mentioned Chile?) And that they found themselves on a spiritual hiking retreat (by accident). These friends have been through a lot together, and it really shows. It is rare that we hear such loving (and hilarious) speeches from bridal parties.

Arantxa and Alex DIY’d a lot of their wedding. When we first sat down with them, they told us about how they saw this cute flower stand on the side of the road and how they were going to use whatever flowers the stand had at the time for their wedding. We were a little worried, (what if they don’t have any flowers!?) but Arantxa was very go with the flow. Their bouquets were handmade, and came out beautifully! They also made their own favors for their guests. They first made beer from scratch, then made mustard with their homemade beer. (We mentioned they were cool, right?)

When we were figuring out their timeline, they wanted to make sure we photographed their “Hora Loca.” At first we were a little unsure about what that even meant. Crazy hour is what it translated to, but that still did not help. Well, Hora Loca rolled around and all of a sudden the dance floor was covered in balloons and whistles. Everyone was on the dance floor and it was crazy. Somehow we avoided the beer that came pouring over the crowd. We made it out alive, but can’t say the same for one of the groomsmen who was carried out for a foot cramp from all the dancing!

Congratulations Arantxa and Alex! This is one wedding we will never forget, thank you for introducing us to Peruvian Cuisine (Yum!), having such sweet family and friends, and for such a great time. We wish you all the happiness in your marriage!

¡Alex se casó con el amor de su vida el sábado!

La hermana del novio, Tory, nos contó la linda historia de la noche en que Alex conoció a Arantxa. Ella describió aquella noche cuando Alex llegó a casa después de su primera cita con Arantxa (muy tarde y con unas copitas de más) y le dijo a su madre que había conocido “al amor de su vida”. En ese momento, todos pensaron que él estaba bromeando. Desde aquel momento, cada vez que Alex mencionaba a Arantxa, su mama bromeando le preguntaba “¿te refieres al amor de tu vida?”. Aunque no tuvimos el honor de la presencia de la madre de Alex en su boda, sabemos que ella habría sido igual de divertida y amorosa como el resto de la familia de los novios.

Arantxa y sus damas comenzaron el día en Blue Bird Farm, en Willington, Connecticut. La granja cuenta con cerdos, ovejas, vacas y unos hermosos perros que ayudan en la granja. Las chicas se alistaron en el granero. Luego se tomaron fotos en el campo. Había un columpio que resultó tener la iluminación perfecta para capturar unas lindas fotos de Arantxa.

Arantxa se mudó a los Estados Unidos desde Perú cuando era niña y muchos de sus familiares no hablaban inglés. Ella nos ayudó a traducir varias veces a lo largo del día. Aunque el padre de Arantxa solo hablaba español, eso no fue impedimento para entender sus bromas. Pudimos entender un poco gracias a nuestras clases de español en la secundaria o con la ayuda de Arantxa. Cuando conocimos a su padre, Arantxa nos presentó como fotógrafos y él respondió que Zac era muy fotogénico! Shelby rápidamente respondió con “¡Si, muy bonita!” Y todos nos reímos. Mientras nos alejabamos, Arantxa dijo “sabes lo que acabas de decir?” y Shelby respondió “sí, él es muy bonito”. Entonces ella se echó a reír y dijo: “¡No, lo llamaste niña bonita!” (¡Lo siento Zac!)

La ceremonia y la recepción de la boda se llevaron a cabo en Holiday Hill en Mansfield, Connecticut. Holiday Hill está ubicado al final de la carretera de la Universidad de Connecticut, coincidentemente donde yo y mi esposo nos conocimos por primera vez. Durante el día, Holiday Hill, sirve como un campamento de verano para niños locales. Los jardines son hermosos. Tienen una gran carpa para bodas y un magnífico granero blanco. El lugar era ideal porque tenía dos cosas que como fotógrafos amamos, las paredes blancas y luz natural. Fuimos muy afortunados y pudimos hacer muchos de sus retratos contra la madera blanca. La pareja optó por tener su boda en el bosque en el escenario del campamento. Estuvieron rodeados de su familia y de unas de las cosas favoritas de Arantxa, los árboles.

El padre de Alex es un Juez de Paz y ofició el matrimonio. Su padre explicó que sabía que Arantxa era especial ya que siempre se divertían juntos en familia. Incluso mencionó a Max, su pequeño pingüino amante de la cerveza (lee sobre él aquí).

Al final de la ceremonia, el padre de Alex y toda la fiesta cantaron “Eso Eso Eso” antes de que todos tomaran una copita de Pisco. Si hay algo que aprendimos en la boda de Arantxa y Alex, es que tienes que saltar y cantar “Eso Eso Eso” antes de tomar un trago. No tenemos idea de lo que significa y aunque pensamos que solo lo buscaríamos en Google cuando llegáramos a casa, ¡pero Google no fue de ayuda!

¡Los tragos al final de la ceremonia fueron solo el comienzo de la fiesta! Cuando regresamos de tomar fotos, el DJ ya tenía la pista de baile repleta (¡todo antes de que se sirviera la cena!). Arantxa y Alex corrieron de la tormenta de lluvia a la fiesta, con buena suerte de su lado.

Las damas y los muchachos de honor de Arantxa y Alex fueron un grupo muy amables. ¡No solo eran divertidos, sino que todos eran muy dulces! Se comunicaron con nosotros para asegurarse de que comiéramos y para ver si necesitábamos algo. Al final de la noche, de alguna manera terminamos con ellos… fotografiándolos subiendo el barco de juegos de Holiday Hill y jugando al mini golf.

Arantxa y Alex tenian a sus hermanas Tory y Adjani como las dos damas de honor. ¡Tory y Sandy (otra dama de honor) dieron discursos sinceros que incluso nos hicieron llorar! Matt, el amigo de honor de Alex a quien conoció en la universidad, nos dio un poco más de información sobre lo genial que esta pareja son. Nos mencionaron en su sesión de compromiso que juntos han viajado por todas partes (¡lea esto aquí!) Algo que Matt mencionó en su discurso fue que todos viajaron a algún lugar … (¿Creemos que mencionó a Chile?) Y que se encontraron en un retiro espiritual (acidentalmente). Estos amigos han pasado por muchas cosas juntos, y realmente se nota. Es raro que escuchemos discursos tan amorosos (y graciosos) de los amigos de honores de los novios.

Arantxa y Alex hicieron muchas cosas a mano para su boda. Cuando nos sentamos con ellos por primera vez, nos contaron cómo vieron lindas flores al lado de la carretera y automáticamente decidieron que iban a usar las flores de temporada para la boda. Estábamos un poco preocupados, (¿y si no tuvieran flores?), Pero Arantxa, es alguien que no se complica la vida. Sus bouquets fueron hechos a mano, y salieron muy lindos! También hicieron sus propios recuerdos para los invitados. Primero hicieron cerveza casera, luego hicieron mostaza con la cerveza que había hecho. (Mencionamos que son bien cheveres, ¿verdad?)

Cuando estábamos pensando en el horario de las fotos, querían asegurarse de que fotografiemos su “Hora Loca”. Al comienzo no entendíamos lo que eso significaba. La “Crazy Hour” es a lo que se traduce, pero eso no ayudó. ¡Entonces la Hora Loca comenzó, lleno de la mejor música, globos y pitos! Todos estaban en la pista de baile y era una locura total. De alguna manera evitamos la lluvia de cerveza que venía sobre la multitud. Logramos salir con vida, pero no podemos decir lo mismo de uno de los padrinos de boda que fue llevado cargado por calambre en los pies de tanto bailar!

¡Felicidades Arantxa y Alex! Esta es una boda que nunca olvidaremos. Gracias por presentarnos a la comida Peruana (que rico!!) y por el gran momento compartido con sus familias y amigos que son tan dulces.
